The landmark east international ideas competition was instigated by EEDA to stimulate creative and visionary ideas for a landmark to put the East of England on the map and help inspire a stronger identity for the region. It attracted over 200 entries from all over the world. 12 were shortlisted by an independent judging panel and four projects were selected to receive funding for feasibility studies which are due to report back in spring/early summer 2005. These range from steel sculptures recreating the lost churches of Dunwich to a movable bridge that could be a focus for riverside events and festivals.
Rachel Bosworth, head of communications for EEDA said:
“We are delighted to be able to exhibit some of the entries in Ipswich, particularly when so many were located in Suffolk. We hope, in raising awareness of the huge range of ideas, that we can trigger wider interest and feedback to help some of the ideas progress, regardless of whether they were winners or shortlisted.”
Bryony Rudkin, leader, Suffolk County Council said:
“The County Council’s new home is the perfect venue to host the EEDA exhibition. Endeavour House is a landmark building and a symbol of how Suffolk is improving. The Landmark east project can make a similar impact on our region and we look forward to hearing people’s views.”
