Project Summary The promenade – a 21st century pier – would be a striking landmark providing views out to sea and back over the town and surrounding area. The Dive Centre – the UK’s first premium quality, custom-built dive and aquarium experience would provide a hyper-real temperate, underwater landscape teeming with fantastic creatures.
The East Reef proposal has the potential to not only become an amenity and to provide a landmark for local residents strengthening local pride, but to also invigorate Jaywick as a coastal destination, once known as ‘one of the happiest resorts on the Essex coast’. The proposals are subject to consultation with residents over the next few months and the East Reef team is currently in discussion with the master planners of Jaywick to explore the possibility of embedding the project into the wider plans for the area.

Quotes
"Tendring District Council working with our partners and the local community and other stakeholders is working to bring about the regeneration of Jaywick. Both the recently commissioned Jaywick Master Plan which is currently being prepared in consultation with all stakeholders alongside the Councils recently published (7 November 2005) Re-Deposit Draft Local Plan, provide the up to date policy context to bring about change. The Local Plan can be viewed on the Councils planning website www.tendringdc.gov.uk/localplan/
In looking to bring about change, this Councils regeneration approach, needs to consider Jaywick within its sea-side context. In this respect the ongoing work with the East Reef project is timely, opportune and very exciting. Consultation on the East Reef project will enable a holistic approach to be taken at the time when both the Local Plan and Master Plan are moving forward, providing for a joined up piece of work, which is to be welcomed."

“Piers are essentially a British invention, and a good one acts as the focal point of any seaside resort. It is nearly fifty years since the last new pier was constructed in England and Wales. The Society welcomes this initiative from the East of England Development Agency and will do all it can to help bring the project to fruition.”
